Doctor Who meets EVE Online! An EVE Online press release caused such a stir this week that even I woke up from my hibernation and needed two days to come to an important realisation…

Suddenly everything vibrated at the same time. The Discord, my Twitter, Youtube. my email inbox, Slack chat..just everything pinged the news:
A new video and devblog are online announcing a crossover between EVE Online and Doctor Who.
My really very first thought was “WTF”. After that I felt sorry for whoever in CCP’s marketing accidentally pressed the wrong button and switched the date format. DD-MM or MM-DD are different things and if they were reversed, the 01.04 would have been a great April Fool’s joke.
But apparently it wasn’t, because only a few minutes later the exact same video was published by the BBC on the YouTube channel of the official Dr.Who series.
While I now have the stoic patience of an ox and like to wait and see, the reaction of the EVE community was all the more violent. reddit was on fire, Twitter was full of mockery, malice and huge question marks and of course Dr.Who quotes.
Eventually I got on board.
Greybill put up a great tweet about it, which also came to me quite spontaneously.

But all the hyperventilating isn’t really helping now.
Yes, a crossover is pretty cool on the one hand and I’m a real Dr.Who fan, but it’s difficult to get the whole thing into an acceptable framework, especially when there is a very rich and deep lore within EVE.
A nice explanation, which I can accept, is that the EVE universe and the Dr. Who universe are actually the same. Thanks to Dr Who’s time jumping ability, it is no problem for him (and the Daleks) to jump 70,000 years into the future.
Only the fact that there are no alien races in EVE, but there are in the Doctor, annoys me a bit when sorting out this madness.
Yes, quite honestly, it feels like madness. Like big marketing madness.
It’s like someone has done a target audience analysis and decided that it’s a good idea to bring Dr Who and the Daleks to New Eden in the hope that some nerd or other will stick around.
Yes, there will be new players. If you can seriously keep these new people hooked with the impressive lore of EVE Online, then please do.
References to Dr.Who have been around for a while in EVE and I even mentioned them in the blog post about containers.
The problem I see is that the biggest influx of players comes from the massive PVP events and not from PVE events.
Maybe it makes more sense to put the development time into FW features or all the other things players want.
I’m very excited about next week and the crossover, and I hope that Dr. Who doesn’t just show up in EVE Online, but that the crossover of EVE Online and Dr. Who is also two-way. Even if the T.A.R.D.I.S. is “only” hotdropped by Snuff, as has already been jokingly noted by various players.
What do you think of this crossover? What advantages do you see? What disadvantages does it have? Can you take this campaign seriously, do you see a real benefit?
